Now exploring: Sela Pass
Mountains, monasteries and a culture older than the roads that lead there.
Tawang sits at about 10,000 ft in Arunachal's far west, close to the borders with Bhutan and Tibet. Its name is said to mean "chosen by horse", from the legend of how the monastery's hilltop site was picked.
Arunachal Pradesh is India's easternmost state, where the sun rises first. Snow peaks, deep river valleys, pine and rhododendron forests, and many tribal cultures shape the land.
The Monpa people of Tawang and Dirang follow Tibetan Buddhism, and prayer flags and mani walls dot the hills. In 1959 the 14th Dalai Lama entered India through Tawang.

Pickup from Guwahati airport or railway station, then an early drive into Arunachal. Visit Tippi Orchid Park and Bomdila Monastery. Night stay in Bomdila or Dirang.
Arunachal, the Land of the Dawn-lit Mountains, greets you at Tippi, where the state's rich orchid heritage blooms among forested hills. Bomdila sits at around 8,000 ft, with Buddhist monasteries and sweeping Himalayan views.
Dirang Monastery, Sela Tunnel, Sela Lake and Nuranang Waterfall on the way. Night stay in Tawang.
Dirang's Monpa stone houses, orchards and river valley give way to the high Sela Pass at about 13,700 ft. Near Jang, the Nuranang Falls thunder down about 100 m, tied to the legend of Nura, a local girl said to have helped Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat in the 1962 war.
Bumla Pass and the China border view, Madhuri Lake and Ptso Lake. Night stay in Tawang. Note: the local vehicle from Tawang to Bumla Pass is extra, ₹5,000 per vehicle.
Bumla Pass, at about 15,200 ft, sits on the India-China border among stark snow peaks. Madhuri Lake, also called Sangetsar, was formed by the great 1950 earthquake, and its drowned tree trunks still stand in the still water.
Visit Tawang Monastery, then drive back with a stop at Sangti Valley. Night stay in Dirang.
Tawang Monastery, founded in the 1680s, is India's largest monastery and belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The 6th Dalai Lama was born near Tawang. On the way back, Sangti Valley's river and pine slopes are a winter home for black-necked cranes.
